Fashions on the Field returns to Flemington this autumn as part of the Flemington Racing Spectacular on TAB Australian Cup Day, Saturday 29 March.

One Best Dressed and One Best Suited winner will be announced on the day after a live judging final, with each winner receiving a $2000 gift card and a spot in the Melbourne Cup Carnival Oaks Day Daily Finals on Crown Oaks Day, Thursday 6 November.

How to Enter On Course

Registration will be open from gates open on TAB Australian Cup Day at 11.30am until 2.00pm. There are no digital entries as part of the TAB Australian Cup Day Competition.

Choose your category, Best Dressed or Best Suited, and head to the dedicated on-course registration area on Flemington Front Lawn near the Makybe Diva Statue. Be sure to check out the important entry details for Best Dressed and Best Suited below!

Register your details with the VRC Event staff and have your photo taken at the dedicated Fashions on the Field photo booth.  

All entrants who have registered and had their photo taken will be judged digitally by an expert panel after registrations close at 2pm. 

If you have made the Best Dressed or Best Suited final you will receive a text message and be invited back to the Flemington Front Lawn at 3pm to showcase your outfit in front of a live judging panel.

A winner from each category will be announced on the day!

Best Dressed Entry Guide

Here are some tips to increase your chances of catching the judges eye!

  1. Embrace bold colours or patterns: Don’t be afraid to stand out with striking colors or unique patterns.
  2. Millinery: A standout hat or fascinator is often the highlight of any racing outfit. Whether classic or modern, make sure it complements your overall look. Millinery is a part of the eligibility criteria so ensure you incorporate this into your ensemble.
  3. Tailoring: A well-tailored outfit can make all the difference. Ensure your ensemble fits perfectly for a polished and professional appearance.
  4. Accessories: Incorporate accessories to complement your look. Small touches can elevate your outfit!
  5. Eligibility Criteria: Be sure to review the entry eligibility and judging criteria below! Don’t overlook any important details to ensure you’re fully eligible!

Entry Eligibility and Judging Criteria

To be eligible to enter the Best Dressed Competition, you must fulfil and agree to abide by the criteria specified in the Competition Terms and Conditions, which includes (but is not limited to) the following: 

  • Must be 18 years of age or more as at the day of competition, and in attendance of the competition.
  • Must not be an employee of the Promoter, its associated companies/subsidiaries or agencies associated with this Promotion;  
  • Must not be immediate family or members of the same household of persons referred to in paragraph b) above.
  • Must not be dressed or styled by a designer or milliner
  • Must not be commercially promoting a brand, store, designer or and other commercial enterprise. 

Our judges consider the following criteria when selecting finalists: 

  • The originality of the outfit - make the outfit your own and show us how your ensemble expresses your personality!
  • The appropriateness of the outfit for the Fashions on the Field Competition – Best Dressed, on TAB Australian Cup Day 2025
  • The understanding and display of style, fashion trends and individuality - use inspiration from current trends to accentuate your own individuality!
  • Use of millinery including hats, fascinators, head bands, tiaras, flower laurels, hair scarves.
  • Attention to detail, including accessories: ties, pocket squares, jewellery, bag and shoes.
  • Grooming and deportment - hair, make-up and grooming can tie your entry together. 
  • How the entire outfit is complementary and fits together - make sure all elements of you outfit work together.
  • Suitability of the outfit for a daytime, race day event.
  • National Dress will be accepted if the above selection criteria is met.
