The Spring Carnival spirit lives on in country Cups

19 November 2024 Written by VRC

As the dust settles on the Melbourne Cup Carnival, the spotlight shifts to the heart of Victoria’s racing scene: the country Cups.

While Flemington may be the grand stage for the Melbourne Cup Carnival, the country Cups offer a different kind of magic. These events are more than just races; they are the heart and soul of regional communities, bringing people together and boosting local economies.

They also provide a vital link between the metropolitan racing scene and the grassroots passion that drives the sport.

Dunkeld, like many other country towns, comes alive during its Cup meeting. Following hot on the heels of the Melbourne Cup Carnival the weekend after TAB Champions Stakes Day, it offers a chance for racing enthusiasts to continue the celebrations in a more relaxed and intimate setting. More than 7000 people enjoyed the sunshine at the popular country race meeting last weekend.

It was here that Rhinoceros, trained by New Zealand expats Emma-Lee and David Browne, was victorious in the 2024 Dunkeld Cup. Ridden by jockey Jack Hill, the six-year-old gelding found a new level of success on the country circuit after his win in the 2023 Peninsula Cup, culminating in his impressive Dunkeld Cup performance.

The Brownes’ journey to Dunkeld began with a bold decision. In 2022, they packed up their established stable in Cambridge, New Zealand, and relocated to Cranbourne, drawn by the vibrant Australian racing industry. It was a leap of faith, but one motivated by their passion for the sport and a desire to compete on a bigger stage.

Country Cups offer a crucial pathway for horses, trainers, and jockeys alike. For horses like Rhinoceros, they provide valuable opportunities to compete for prize money and gain experience. For trainers like the Brownes, they offer a chance to build their reputation and connect with new owners.

And for jockeys, they offer a platform to shine. Linda Meech, who won the Dunkeld Cup 12 years ago, had a winning double at Dunkeld on Cup Day.
