Slip, slop, slap: Protecting the horses through summer

6 December 2024 Written by VRC

Just like us, horses need protection from the harsh summer sun. While their coats offer some defence, those pink noses, white markings, and sensitive ears can easily get sunburned. Along with providing access to shady areas in paddocks, like a shed or trees, and limiting sun exposure during peak sunlight hours, there are a number of other measures taken by trainers and stable staff to ensure that they are not affected.

Slip on a rug

A summer rug is important for protecting from UV rays and insects. Staff will choose the most adequate rug for horses from options like the following.

  • Summer sheet: Lightweight and breathable, offering UV protection. Perfect for hot days, but not waterproof.
  • Mesh rug: Allows airflow while protecting from sun and insects. Dries quickly, making it suitable for humid climates or light showers.
  • Canvas rug: Breathable and waterproof, ideal for unpredictable weather.

Slop on sunscreen

  • Equine-specific sunscreen: Handlers will use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, specifically formulated for horses.
  • Target sensitive areas: This will be applied generously to the muzzle, ears, and any white markings. Reapplication is necessary every few hours, especially after sweating.

Slap on a fly mask

  • Fit with a fly mask: Horses may be fitted with a fly mask with UV protection to shield their eyes and sensitive facial skin. These will be fitted so that they are comfortable and allow for proper ventilation. Fly masks provide horses with protection from bugs, debris, dust, sun glare, and other irritants that can be harmful to their eyes.
  • Natural insect repellents with ingredients like rosemary and cedarwood oil may also be applied, which are gentle on a horse’s skin while still being effective against biting insects.
