King Of Roseau: Flemington specialist with elite pedigree

4 August 2025

King Of Roseau confirmed his liking for the Flemington straight with his win in Saturday's Group 3 Aurie's Star Handicap (1200m), which continued a rich family history with Australia's most famous racecourse.

The four-year-old son of Capitalist is from a family that has won some of the most prestigious races run at Flemington, including its most famous print race.

Among the family is 1933 Newmarket Handicap winner Waltzing Lily, who also won a Standish Handicap at Flemington, plus a couple of Memsie Stakes, a William Reid Stakes and a Futurity Stakes.

One of Waltzing Lily's daughters is Waltzing Lady, who won the 1953 VRC Oaks.

Waltzing Lady herself impacted some Flemington features as a broodmare with one of her daughters, Snowline, throwing three foals who won VRC features.

She is the dam of Silver Sharpe, who enjoyed a stellar spring in 1970, winning not only the Victoria Derby but also the Sydney and Brisbane Derbys back when they were run in spring.

Two others out of Snowline, Snowtop and Snowmist, won the Edward Manifold Stakes at Flemington.

Snowmist is the fourth dam of King Of Roseau, who was a $95,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase for Pulse Racing and Pinhook Bloodstock.

Snowmist produced Best Percentage after a meeting with Gold And Ivory, and Best Percentage threw a Group 1 winner of her own in the form of Danni Martine, who won a Coolmore Classic and was placed in a Doncaster Mile.

King Of Roseau's dam is Choisir mare Dominica, who is the last of Danni Martine's seven foals.

The Aurie's Star Handicap is unlikely to be the final straight-track feature King Of Roseau contests this season with trainer Peter Snowden already planning a return with 1200m Group 2 races including the Bobbie Lewis Quality and Gilgai Stakes potential targets.

His only straight-track experience prior to the Aurie's Star Handicap came in the Listed Poseidon Stakes last spring, when he finished third being classy colts Growing Empire and First Settler.

"Now we know he really likes Flemington there's no doubt we'll be back at some time through the year," Snowden said after the win.

"Not every horse handles Flemington down the straight, but this horse has got a bit of an affinity for it and that was a dominant win there today."

King Of Roseau has now won his past three starts, lifting his career record to four wins and six placings from 18 starts.
