From Leighlinbridge to Flemington: Vauban’s journey so far

4 November 2024 Written by VRC

Preparations for the Willie Mullins-trained Vauban have been in full swing for many months. The VRC first caught up with Dave Casey, foreman, in August this year in Ireland, where he discussed the logistics of bringing the Lexus Melbourne Cup favourite to Australia. The team was focused on managing each detail to ensure he would arrive in top condition. Their plan was as much about timing as it is about training: every workout leading up to the trip was calibrated to maintain his peak form, knowing the first week in Australia will involve lighter work.

After touching down in October, the horse began his Australian routine with a gentle hack to stretch his legs and a relaxed canter on the polytrack, getting used to his new environment. He had a clip, and each day’s routine builds on the last, with an eye on making him feel comfortable and healthy as he settles in. Carrots and sand rolls are regular features to keep him happy.

With race day drawing near, every workout is crucial, as the team balances his fitness, readiness, and rest.

They know that the Lexus Melbourne Cup is the pinnacle of flat racing, and this race is their moment to shine, their chance to “chase the dream.”

Working toward this since the day after last year’s Cup, the team is quietly confident, carefully crafting every detail, with high hopes that this year’s setup will play to their advantage. With optimism and purpose, they’re ready to go the distance in one of the world’s most prestigious races.
