First Settler back on Flemington track

26 March 2025 Written by Racing and Sports, Craig Brennan

With a liking for the Flemington straight, First Settler is set to run first-up in the HKJC World Pool Sprint Classic.

The Mick Price and Michael Kent stable holds high expectations for First Settler who makes a delayed reappearance at Flemington on Saturday.

The son of Written Tycoon runs first-up in the Listed HKJC World Pool Sprint Classic (1100m) ahead of a trip to Sydney.

Price said the stable had wanted First Settler to be up and going a little earlier than Saturday's autumn return, but a paddock setback pushed his return to the stable back and his preparation.

"He hurt a hind leg in the paddock and that held him up a little bit, but I think we'll be able to catch the right races," Price said.

First Settler was successful at three of his first four starts including the Group 2 Danehill Stakes over Saturday's course and distance.

He was defeated by Growing Empire in the lead-up to the Danehill Stakes in the Listed Poseidon Stakes (1100m) at Flemington on September 14.

First Settler's spring campaign came to an end when he finished ninth in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on November 2.

The colt has had two 800m jump-outs at Cranbourne in preparation for his return, winning on each occasion, accounting for Jimmysstar on March 10 and then A Little Deep on March 17.

"He trialled last week and trialled very good, in fact both his trials have been very good," Price said.

"He was probably on the way down in the Coolmore, but he's a lovely colt, he's got a good brain on him and he's no trouble.

"I think on what he's been showing us, he'll show up on Saturday for sure, so he'll run down the straight, which he likes the straight, and then he'll go to Arrowfield.

"He's got good Group ability and hopefully he's got Group 1 ability at some point."

The Group 2 Arrowfield Stakes (1200m) will be run at Randwick on April 12.

Stablemate Hot Digity Boom will also line up in the HKJC World Pool Sprint Classic with Price feeling some added pressure.

Hot Digity Boom is part-owned by Price's daughters Kelly and Stephanie.

"If he can run second to First Settler, then we'll be happy," Price said.
