Exit out to stop Flemington rivals

30 July 2025 Written by Racing and Sports, Craig Brennan

Exit will be out to make it two wins on end when she lines up at Flemington.

The Ciaron Maher stable has high hopes of Exit reaching greater heights and as part of the filly's education she is likely to be Flemington bound.

A benchmark 70 race over 1400m for three-year-olds on Saturday is the likely next assignment for Exit who scored first-up over 1300m at Sandown on July 16.

That was the filly's second outing, having finished ninth in the Blue Diamond Prelude at Caulfield over 1100m back in February.

Jack Turnbull, Maher's National Assistant Trainer, said the stable had always held Exit in high regard and was looking forward to the spring with the filly.

Firstly though, the Maher team wants to build the profile of the filly and Saturday's race over 1400m looks a nice progression.

After holding nominations open until Tuesday morning, just seven horses have been entered with acceptances and the barrier draw to be declared on Wednesday.

"Hopefully she builds off how she ran first time out and we can look to a (Thousand Guineas) Prelude, or something like that after," Turnbull said.

"We threw her in the deep end when we ran her in the Prelude on debut. She was very green that day, and just the pressure caught her out, but we've always liked her.

"She's got a big frame and plenty of growing still to do, but she has taken the right steps to head towards better races.

"Three weeks between run is ideal and hopefully we can draw a gate.

"The big track is a plus."

Exit has the pedigree to win a Stakes race during the spring.

While her dam, Secretly Discreet, by Lonhro, only had one win from 10 starts, Exit's granddam is Maybe Discreet, a winner of the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville

Earlier in Maybe Discreet's three-year-old year, she won the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m), a race another of her daughters, Too Darn Discreet, won last year.

Too Darn Discreet also features among nominations at Flemington on Saturday in the Benchmark 84 Handicap over 1600m.
